Days 27 & 28 - July 2 & 3

July 2

We finally catch a fairly nice west breeze and the road is pretty good. SAG parked in Iron River WI to wait for Allan and noticed a lot of folks going in and out of B's Busy Bakery - well named evidently. When Allan arrived, we went in and the woman was telling a customer she would lkely have to close early because everything was flying off the shelves. We splurged on a couple of items and in the ten minutes we sat there, fourteen customers came in. Amazing. We called ahead to Sarah Nemec of the Ashland Daily Press and set a meet time of 2pm for pictures and interview. SAG ran errands in Ashland and then returned to Rte 2 to wait for Allan. Unfortunately, the wind had helped so much, he arrived earlier than anticipated and went through while I was doing errands. And I had absolutely no cell service. Fortunately Allan did, so he called Sarah who tracked me down and everything worked out great.

In the afternoon, Allan talked to 4 cyclists going Portland2Portland from east to west. They left Portland Maine on the same day we left Portland Oregon. Nice coincidence. He invited them to Manzanita when they get to the Pacific. If everybody Allan has invited shows up, there will be a line down the street waiting to get in. Tried to get a campsite in a county park on Lake Superior for the night, but being the 4th, it was wall to wall people and cars, half the toilets were not working and the showers were locked. We settled for an RV park in Cedar.

July 3

Still have very spotty cell service but have stopped in Watersmeet MI (our ninth state and now just over 2000 miles from the start) for a break and the cafe has wi-fi. We discovered this morning that the mosquitoes in Wisconsin have industrialized and formed work shifts. They were as bad in the morning as the evening. The Watersmeet July 4th parade was just forming up as SAG drove in, and I was tempted to join in. The truch was certainly as decorated as any other vehicle. The people in Big Mama's Grill were egging me on, but I need to be here when Allan arrives. Don't need another Ashland.

Today is a tough day because there are limited camping opportunities and facilities for awhile, so we have to push up to 100 miles. The road is pretty good and what wind there exists is being helpful. Pat Moss and Deb Farron join Allan on July 6th and 7th for a ride along the Upper Peninsula, before our big event in Traverse City.

It sounds to me like Paisley Oregon with it's mosquito festival couldn't hold a candle to what you two have been through!
We're waiting for more pictures, especially when Pat and Debbie join the ride.

Good Evening, Allan Olson, Sir (and Compatriot):
The Powers that be have granted the Fire Fighters’ annual, recurring request: today was cool and misty. Perhaps there will not be too many fires started by fireworks-gone-astray. My personal wishes are for a minimum number of Dogs (and, ok, cats too!) scared out of their wits by fire-crackers. We all have our priorities.
I am wondering how your hunt for the perfect Martini is going: according to my information, the State Drink of Wisconsin is MILK as well! But when it comes to Michigan, like Washington State, it does not have a State Drink. It seems to me that here is your opportunity to start a grass-roots-movement to make a Dry Martini the State Drink of Michigan! But while you are pedaling along, contemplating Martini Groundswells, keep in mind that the State Animal (non-game) of Michigan is the Wolverine, who, ounce for ounce is about as nasty an animal as you can find in the lower 48. Watch yourself!
The good news is that the “National Cherry Festival , held during the first full week of July every year, is a draw for tourists to Traverse City. The festival features parades, fireworks, an air show, election of festival royalty, live music, a pie-eating contest and ( surprise, surprise) CHERRIES!” So if you are getting tired of your high protein mosquito diet, you can add some fruit to your intake...
Another piece of information regarding Traverse City I found is “The locale and topography is conducive for bicycling” I don’t suppose you would be interested in that...
Hope you get an opportunity to celebrate Independence Day (as appropriate for a middle-aged socialist!) and continue to ride safely. You might consider dressing up Rocinante with a red-white-and-blue streamer, just for the day!
Greta, independent as always and Bailey, getting that way...
